The Isle of Man is an internally self-governing British Crown Dependency with Her Majesty, the Queen as Sovereign. It has a population of approximately 84,000 people and has the oldest continuous parliament in the world (Tynwald). Tynwald passes its own legislation which is promulgated following Royal Assent. It has its own independent legal profession and court system. The Isle of Man is not an EU member but does have a special relationship which is dependent upon the UK’s membership of the EU and governed by Protocol 3 of Act of Accession 1972. Under Protocol 3, the Isle of Man is part of the customs territory of the Union. The Isle of Man’s relationship with the EU post-Brexit will be negotiated by the UK.
