London FOIL

Our Mission

We aspire to be the voice of legal services providers serving the Lloyd’s and London (Re)Insurance Markets. Not only as a specialist body of practitioners, but as a trusted partner that immerses itself in the issues concerning the Market and those in it who we work alongside. We do this by remaining true to our core London FOIL values of lobbying, educating and networking.

We achieve this by:

  • Listening to the Market
  • Representing the Market's best interests
  • Helping the Market maintain its preeminent professional position
  • Providing clear and pragmatic advice to the Market
  • Working collaboratively with other experts retained by the Market
  • Being fully engaged with and within the Market and acting as an ambassador at home and overseas

London FOIL was created in 2018 as a new division of the organisation that will support the insurance and reinsurance law firms and lawyers working in the London Lloyd’s Market.

With an exclusively defendant focused agenda, London FOIL provides a platform for lobbying, education and networking. For 2023/24 the division will be led by Fleur Rochester partner at global law firm Kennedys, who takes on the role of President.

The work of the new division is delivered through effective processes and practices that FOIL has established over the last 25 years: London FOIL comprises sector focused teams – small groups of specialist expert lawyers from different firms collaborating, campaigning, discussing and seeking common solutions to some of the larger thematic issues the industry faces. This could be helping the industry address its modernisation agenda, lobbying on behalf of the industry over Brexit, or teaming up to help the sector tackle the talent and diversity challenges it may face. The thorough industry consultation and modelling that led up to the launch of this new division identified the need for a collective voice on these key issues. London FOIL helps to develop close relationships with insurance and reinsurance companies and trade bodies, whilst maintaining independent views on how to resolve the challenges facing the London Market.

Commenting on the initial launch of London FOIL in 2018, Laurence Besemer, FCII, CEO of FOIL said:

  • In the last quarter-century FOIL has established itself as the leading voice representing those engaged in the defence of insurance-related claims. Rolling out this successful model into the most famous insurance market in the world, marks the start of an exciting new chapter and I’m looking forward to working with the London FOIL Executive team and all the other exceptional lawyers in this market

In support of London FOIL, Christopher Jones, Director of Legal and Marketing Services from the International Underwriting Association says:

  • The formation of the London FOIL is a welcome development. Insurance law has changed much in recent years and a more effective voice for legal professionals in our sector will certainly benefit the industry as a whole.

Christopher Jones Director of Legal and Marketing Services from the International Underwriting Association
