This consultation document shows the Government’s determination to embrace and encourage the development of automated vehicles (AVs) but in a way that is safe. An ALKS is designed to enable the driver – for the first time ever in commercially available vehicles – to delegate the dynamic driving task to the vehicle under certain circumstances. This is distinct from driver assistance systems where the driver must remain in control of the vehicle and remains responsible for the driving task at all times.
